The laboratories that comprise the Beckman Institute range from artificial intelligence, computer science, and computer and materials design to cognitive science, neuroscience, and related subfields of biology. Some faculty members have their entire laboratories within the Institute, while others have a part-time presence in the Institute and retain some laboratory facilities in the Psychology Building. The program of the Beckman Institute are best characterized by their interdisciplinary and collaborative nature: Psychology faculty are collaborating on projects as diverse as the application of cognitive principles to artificial systems (and vice versa) and the use of neural network models to understand brain systems (and vice versa).
